January 31st, 2020

Wow - it's hard to believe today is the last day of January!

***I am sending home your child's new side shoes for washing.  Unfortunately we have some very stinky shoes!! (Some must have forgotten and wore inside shoes out).  If you could please return these on Monday - thanks for your help.  Several people have commented as they come into the room - so the odour is bad!

We completed our first week of spelling, the students did well and are getting into the routine.  As I mentioned in my email on Wednesday they will be bringing their duo-tangs home on Wednesday and Thursday evening to complete the lesson (one page double-sided) as these must be done by Friday.  Please remind your child to use lower case letters only as I will soon be marking the words wrong if they start with a capital or have an uppercase word in the middle.  THEY MUST RETURN their Spelling Duotangs EACH DAY.  Thanks for your help and support with this.

***Flashlight Reading is next Friday the 7th. Your child should bring a flashlight (please check the batteries) and a favourite book to read.  The students will get into their house teams for this special reading event.

Our Valentine's Celebration will be on Wednesday, Feb. 12th.  Below is a list of all the students in Div. 9.  If your child plans to hand out valentines it is important that they include everyone in the whole class so that no one feels left out.

January 23/20

Reminder that tomorrow is a Pro D day for teachers so there is no school for students.

Div. 9 has been busy in music! If you'd like to hear their new creations please go to Dr. Saul's website and go to Div. 9.  http://saulfvemusic.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_71.html
***Go to      Student Soundtracks on Films

On Tuesday Div. 9 &10 were very lucky to have a special presentaion from Maya a member from the Committee on the Endangered Wildlife in Canada.  She taught us all about Western Painted Turtles and also native and invasive frogs in British Columbia.  Ask you child some of the things they learned!

It's seems like our snow has now almost disappeared and the rain has arrived.  Please ensure that yor child has an extra set of clothes including socks as everyday we have lots of wet clothes!  Remember at Fairview we do West Coast Recess/Lunch so the children will be going out rain or shine!

Your child should be practicing their Winter Poems at home.  Please be sure these are in their book bags.  We hope to present these next week.

Please note that on Tuesday and Thursdays, I am coaching the girls basketball team so will be leaving the classroom by 2:30.  If possible please be sure to pick your child up on time but if you are running late I will take them to the office and you'll need to pick them up there.

Next Monday we will be starting our Spelling Program.  Most Mondays the students will write their words in their planners.   Some of the words may seem easy for some but that is okay because the purpose of the spelling program is for the children to learn phonetic patterns, suffixes and prefixes, word endings and how some of the rules in the English language work or change!  Each week we will be quizzing the students with an unknown 'Bonus Word' that follows that pattern so if your child has mastered the words you can spend time on learning more challenging words that still follow the pattern for that week.  More information on spelling is in a letter which you will get on Monday.

Our Valentine's Celebration will be on Wednesday, Feb. 12th.  Below is a list of all the students in Div. 9.  If your child plans to hand out valentines it is important that they include everyone in the whole class so that no one feels left out.

January 17/20

What a snowy week!  I was happy that at least this year the children had an opportunity to play in the snow - so often on the west coast it turns to rain so fast their fun is limited!

Thanks to everyone who helps make our Family Reading very special!

The students are enjoying our collaboration time with Mrs. Holmes.  This week they have learned about text features (headings, sub-headings, charts, graphs etc) in non-fiction books.  See if we your child can show you some of these in their books.

Reminders...

***Scholastic is due on Monday, Jan. 20th.  We will not be doing an order in February due to the Scholastic Book Fair at the school.

***Please practice the poems that are in your child's book bag.  I think all but one group now has them.  Every child should have new books in their book bags.  These bags should be brought to school daily.

***PAC hot lunch was changed due to the snow to next Wed., Jan. 22nd (they are not accepting any new orders).

***Headphones or earbuds - please send in if you haven't already done so.

***February 20th is our 100th Day celebration.  This year all the primary students are asked to wear 100 things.  For example - 100 hair ties or bracelets, a t-shirt with 100 ?? on it (could be anything googly eyes, stickers, pom-poms).  We did this a couple years ago and it was very successful!  We were impressed by the creativity!

***Please mark your calendars - February is always such a busy, fun month!

Happy New Year! 2020!

January 10, 2020

Hope you all had a fantastic winter break!

Div. 9 is excited to be doing a special research project with Div. 10 and Mrs. Holmes in the library.  We are back into our Canada unit and will be specifically studying Canadian animals.  Please ensure your child has earphones/buds as we do need them for this, classroom and the computer lab.

I have updated the calendar on this blog - please check it for upcoming events.

Please be sure that your child bring their book bag every day as we do use these regularly in class.  This week in Reader's Workshop we are doing Winter poems so when you see one in their bag please have your child practice reading it as they will be presenting it to the class with their group.  I am in the process of changing all the students JRR books, today I did several groups and will finish the rest on Monday.

January weather has definitely hit and it is important that all students have an extra set of clothes (including socks!).  With our west coast recess and lunches students will be going out rain or shine.  Plus we also go out for to the forest every Thursday.

I am coaching girls basketball so on Tuesdays and Thursday after schools.    If you are late picking up your child on one of those days and don't see your child outside I will have dropped them off at the office.

Have a great weekend!  Hopefully the children can get outside more to enjoy the snow!
