Sept. 27th

Terry Fox was a big success!  Thanks to Rhys and Chase's mom for running with us and helping all the students with their tattoos before the run.  Fairview raised $2,699.50 - over our goal, way to go Fairview!

Poetry and More books went home today.  These will go home on Fridays, please read with your child or have them read/sing it to you.  It's called Poetry and More because they maybe poems or songs, or there may be a math game or even a word search!   Please return these on Mondays.

Scholastic book orders were sent home on Wednesday - thanks to Cam's family for organizing them for us.   If you are interested in buying any of the books please have your orders in by Monday. You can order online (*I have reactivated this so you should be able to do this now!) or by filling out the order form(s) and paying by cheque (made out to Scholastic).  I can not accept cash - sorry.

Orange Shirt day on Monday, Sept. 30.  It is an opportunity to come together in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation. If students could wear an orange shirt that would be great but please don't feel you have to go out and buy one.  We will be doing an activity to help children understand that Every Child Matters.

Entertainment Books, Comfort Kits, and blue registration should all be brought to school by next week.  Also if your child has not brought in their inside shoes, headphones and an extra set of clothes please send these in asap.

Sign up for Celebration snacks - thanks to everyone who has already signed up.  If you haven't had a chance please try to stop in and sign up next week, after that I will ask your child to choose one.  Thanks again!

Have a great weekend!

Sept. 20/19

***As we finish our second week together Div. 9 is making progress in learning our daily routines and classroom exceptions.  We started our home reading program and currently have a temporary planner.  Please check this daily, initial after reading and use this when you need to communicate information to me (dentist appt./pickup etc).

***Our Terry Fox Run is fast approaching.  Please complete the permission for walking field trips by Tuesday if you would like your child to participate.  Students who have not been given permission will be walking around the fields at Fairview instead.  To give your child permission, please open the parent portal, click on the blue tab at the top that says 'Consent' (it will have a number in it, this is how many areas you need to complete).  You will need to scroll through each form and click on the bottom as guided to give your permission.  Thank you!  If you have any difficulty, please call Korri or Karen in the office at 604 465 9331. Our fundraising goal is $2000.00 and will be collected until Sept. 27th.  We are hoping that every student at Fairview can help out by donating their change or $5.00 - you can also donate online.  Volunteers are needed both on the course and if you'd like to join our classroom.  Please let me know if you can help out.

***Please ensure that your child brings in inside shoes/ ear buds or headphones for both the computer lab and the classroom, comfort kits, parent surveys and blue Student Verification forms.  There is a contest to see which primary and intermediate class can get all their forms in first.  Go Div. 9!!  Also Entertainment books were sent home on Thursday from the PAC, this is one of their main fundraisers so if you can help that would be great, if not please return the book that was sent home for you.

***Div. 9 & 10 have already booked  3 skating field trips and a trip to visit Fort Langley.  Please mark your calendars - Thursday, Oct. 24th, Thursday, Dec. 19th, and Thursday March 5th - all in the afternoon.  Also we have booked Fort Langley on Thursday, Nov. 14th in the morning.  We will need parent drivers for all of these.

***Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather as we have West coast recess and lunches, unless the weather is extremely bad they will be going outside.  Also a reminder that we have Forest fun on Thursdays and again will be going out rain or shine.   It is a good idea to send in another set of clothes just in case your child needs them. Thanks.

***Monday, Sept. 23rd is an Non-Instructional Day so there is no school for students.
Tuesday, Sept. 24th is Individual Picture Day.

***Snack Celebration Sign up is available just inside the classroom door so whenever you have a chance please signup for one of Div. 9's celebrations that would be appreciated!

Have a great weekend.  Sheralyn

Friday, Sept. 13th! Yikes it is also a full moon!!

Thanks to everyone who was able to join us for Family Reading this morning.  As I mentioned this blog will be our major communication so please check regularly and hopefully you will find this a good tool to learn everything about Div. 9!  If you have any problems please let me know.

Just a bit more information about our class and the upcoming weeks...
*Please note we do have a pecan/walnut allergy so please don't send those nuts (peanuts and peanut butter are okay).
*We are encouraging healthy eating habits so please don't send candy but instead a variety of food from all the food groups.  Thanks for your support!
*If you have not sent in supplies (ear buds or headphones as well) please do so asap as we are starting all our routines.  Also be sure that your child has inside running shoes, with these rainy weather it is even more important to keep our classroom, gym and hallways as clean as possible.   Thanks again.
*Please fill out the purple Parent Survey and the volunteer sheet (if you can help out) and return to the school. Thanks to everyone that has already done so.
*Our planners won't be available for a few weeks so we will be using temporary ones starting on Monday as well as our T.H.B. (Take Home Book) program.  These will be in a ziplock bag that should come to school each day.
*Fairview's Terry Fox run is coming up soon - Thursday, Sept. 26th at 1:00 - parent volunteers are needed both to join Div. 9 and also for the route.  If you can help out please let me know.

Please also read the first two posts below (as you'll notice - the first is another copy of the letter I sent home on Wednesday).

Have a great weekend!

First Letter Home! - September 2019

Dear Parents,

My name is Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani and I have been a teacher at Fairview for several years, largely teaching in the primary grades. I have had previous experience teaching a grade 2/3 combined class (in fact prefer a multi-age class) and feel well prepared to provide a positive and engaging learning environment for your child.  I am looking forward to a great year!

Classroom Routines
One of the big focuses when starting a new year is setting up routines within the classroom.  Getting these in place ensures that the day runs smoothly and that learning time is maximized.  With this in mind, I would like to ask that arrive on time and say your goodbyes to your child outside so that they can enter the room on their own and learn to follow the routines independently.  You are welcome to come in once students are dismissed at the end of the day if you would like to chat with me or if your child would like to share something inside the room with you.  Also, please send me a note if your child is supposed to meet you/a sibling at an alternate part of the school so I can ensure everyone is safely picked up.

Communication
I do realize that there are some mornings where you might have information to share with me that will help your child have a positive day (they haven’t had a good sleep, were nervous about school etc.)  Please feel free to see me if this is the case or write a note in your child’s planner.  You can also phone the school (604- 465-9331) and schedule an appointment to see me or email me at Sheralyn_rowledge@sd42.ca. (Please note:  I rarely have time to check my email during the school day, I normally check it after school and early in the morning before I leave for work so it is better to reach me with time sensitive messages by phone or in person).I really feel it is important to keep the lines of communication open and encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns that may arise.  The main place you will be receiving information from me at this time is via our classroom blog - https://division9fairview.blogspot.com   I normally update this each week (most often on Friday or Saturday) but occasionally things arise between posts. If this happens, your child will write ‘See Blog’ in his/her planner.  This will be one of the last ‘paper’ information packages you will receive. Our district is working towards paperless communication so the majority of information you receive from the school/myself will be digital, Mrs. Watkins will share school wide information via Facebook , the Parent Portal or on the Fairview Website.

Getting to Know Your Child/Parent Helpers
I have attacked a questionnaire that I would like you to fil out and return asap. Thanks so much these give me valuable information and insights about your child that sometimes would take me months to discover.  Thank You!
I also am attaching a parent helper sheet and welcome volunteers.  I realize that many of you may work during school hours and can’t volunteer during this time.  If this is the case and you have a day off sometime and would like to come in please let me know and I will try to arrange an activity where you can help or come for a visit.  Also, if you don’t mind completing some work in the evening, I have several jobs throughout the year where your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Weekly Schedule
We will have library book exchange on Fridays (but there is a bin in our classroom for returns if your child is finished with his/her book before the week is up). Our gym days are Monday (with me) and Tuesday (with Mrs. Boyes).  We will have Music with Dr. Saul on Wednesdays.  We will be heading outside on Thursdays (rain or shine) for some ‘Forest Fun’ which includes running and exploration/play outdoors.  **Please note, however that the Ministry has mandated 30 minutes of physical activity each day so please ensure that your child is dressed comfortably and is ready for action!  We will be spending time outside rain or shine!  Finally, this weekwe will begin ‘Family Reading’ each Fridayfrom 8:30-8:45.  Parents, grandparents and any other adult family members are invited to come in and read with a small group of students.  This is an informal reading time so younger siblings are also welcome.

Planners
Our class will be using a student ‘planner’ this year. Unfortunately, the printing company lost Fairview’s order this year so we will be using a modified version until these arrive.  The planner is an essential part of our program and will provide home and school communication throughout the year as well as weekly spelling lists (we will start weekly spelling later in the year).  The planner will be sent home each afternoon in your child’s own ziploc bag and should be returned to school the following morning.  There is a specific area allotted for home/school communication so please feel free to write a note to me in this space (dental appointments, who is picking your child up etc.)  Please sign the planner daily once you have read with your child.  Also, please feel free to write encouraging comments for your child here.  IMPORTANT: There is a plastic pocket at the front of the planner where notices will be sent home.  It is also where you can return signed permission slips, field trip money etc.  Please check this daily.

Supplies
Please send in your child’s supplies as soon as possible.  You should have already received this list but if you need a new one, please send me an email at Sheralyn_Rowledge@sd42.caand I will send you an attachment.  The only additional supply we will need at this time is earbuds/headphones for the lab/iPads.  Please send these in a clearly marked baggie.  Having personal headphones will greatly reduce the chances of our students coming in contact with lice.  Thank you!

Litterless Lunch/Nut Allergy
If possible we are asking all students to take home all their garbage and recycling. Please include a ziplock in your child’s lunchkit for easy clean-up. We have a student that is allergic to walnuts and pecans, please do not send anything with these.

Scholastic Book Orders
Several times throughout the year your child will be bringing home Scholastic book order forms.  Purchasing these books is optional but if you are interested they do offer engaging books at reasonable prices.  If you do purchase books, I ask that you please send a cheque payable to Scholastic Canadaas they will not accept cash.  You also have the option of paying them directly online.  Thank you!

Themes
We are beginning the school year learning about each other and discussing the importance of being a good friend/classmate and beginning to build our classroom community. We will then move onto a focus on Canada.

Class Celebrations
We will have four main celebrations during the year.  If you could please sign up to send snacks for the class on oneof these dates that would be much appreciated. I  will have this up for our first Famiyl Reading and then have a sign up sheet ready near the entrance from the outside door.

Inside Shoes/Extra Clothes
If you have not already done so, I would like to ask you to send a pair of sturdy inside running shoes to help keep our classroom and gym clean.  I also suggest that each student have an extra set of clothes to keep at school.  This is helpful to have in case of any accidents and avoids the need for a phone call home.

West coast Recess/Lunch:
Just a reminder that our district has adopted the ‘west coast recess’. Students will be sent outside to play rain or shine (unless conditions are extreme).  With this in mind, please send your child to school with the appropriate gear so that they will be comfortable for the rest of the day.
Thank you!

Important Dates in September
**Please note:  These will be on the class blog in the future.
September 16th-PAC meeting
September 23th- Non-Instructional (no school for students)
September 24th-Picture Day
September 26th   -Terry Fox Run
***PLEASE NOTE: WALKING PERMISSION NEEDS TO BE GIVEN VIA THE PARENT PORTAL (Policy and Prodedures) FOR YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE OFF SITE FOR THE TERRY FOX RUN

I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year with your children.  I am also looking forward to working with you, the parents – partners in your child’s education.

Thank you,

Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani

WELCOME!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On this blog you will find everything that is happening and going to happen in Div. 9.
Monthly newsletters and calendars will be posted as well as weekly updates - we are trying to be environmentally friendly so there will be no paper copies.   Please try to get into the habit of visiting this site regularly. Student photos will be posted and they will have input as to what is included and shared on this blog. I will check whether you have given permission for your child's photo to be included but PLEASE let me know if this changes or if there is a problem.  Please also be sure to check out the useful links for good educational websites.

Many parents in the past have said how much they enjoy it as a way to connect with their child and what they are doing at school.  Hope you enjoy and check it regularly!

Week #12 - Last week of School! It's Summer!!!

Wow it our last week of school!  For this week please make your photo collage and decorate the cover for your memory book  (as outlined on ...
