Div. 9 Home Learning

Dear Families,
I hope you and your loved ones are well.  I really enjoy our zoom calls and your emails with your child’s work. I understand that everyone is making adjustments to our present situation and that each of you have unique challenges at home.  Please do what you can and send me an email with any questions or concerns.  I have collected/created a bank of ideas that can be completed with and without technology, using items you already have in the home.  I will send out weekly plans with some Must Do’s but other than that feel free to pick and choose activities that work for you and your family at this difficult time in our lives.

Our goal (as outlined by the Ministry of B.C) is to complete 5-7 hours of schoolwork each week and I will support (with Zoom) students to make connections with their classmates and continue to develop their social emotional learning.
Every day please try to:
***Readat least 15 minutes.  You can read books, Raz Kids, Epic (add site) even comics or magazines.
Listening to stories, books is also very valuable and fun!  So just cuddle up and READ!
***Do some kind of writing(approx. 30 minutes), a story, journal, letter, message. I will include weekly ideas but if you’d rather write on your own idea or one from one of the idea charts feel free.  Parents please remember that spelling probably won’t be correct.  It is okay and is actually important for them to use ‘kid’ or inventive spelling (that is how they learn to use their phonetic knowledge).  In class we often go back after writing, read over and edit in a different colour looking to make sure our writing makes sense, looking for spelling (circle or change), capitals and periods.

***Numeracy – Math (approximately 30 minutes)
This can be a variety of activities and games.  Remember math includes patterns, counting, addition, subtraction, graphing, geometry, calendar, measurement, fractions and more. So the possibilities are endless eg.) finding patterns or geometric shapes in your home or on a walk. Baking is reading and math! I will give you weekly ideas, plus sites like Abcya, Prodigy and some worksheets that you could print and complete.

***DPA (Daily Physical Activity) this is very important and as you know your children need to move!  After 20-30 minutes of sitting we often have an action break!  I will be adding suggestions for this as well.  Plus Mrs. Boyes has some great ideas that are in the Dropbox.
We have been told to focus on literacy and numeracy at this time, but I have included some Science and Social Studies (which we call Theme) as well as Art/Drama ideas that you can work on. Dr. Saul will also be posting on his blog. All of these links are on (or will be on!) the Online Learning Page at the top of the blog!

As I mentioned to (hopefully) all of you I want you to be thinking about a ‘Passion Project’.  Really the sky is the limit, anything goes but I will add more information about this in the future!  My goal is for you to be able to share these on Zoom and maybe even have small group sessions while they are a work in progress.

Div. 9 Jokes– If anyone wants to send me any jokes, I will add them each week!  We all need some laughs right now! You can also send me any Tongue Twisters!
