Week 11 Learning Opportunities

Hi Everyone,

I hope you and your loved ones are well. This will be our last full week of Home Learning opportunities.  Next week we will provide you with a list of fun options you can choose from.  Thank you for supporting your child this year, particularly during the Home Learning portion of 2020.

By Friday, please:
1) Email a copy of the Self-Reflection
2) Complete a numeracy assignment (if not on Prodigy)

Please note: I am following the guidelines set out by our District Superintendant, Sylvia Russel.  The activities I am offering are ‘learning opportunities’.  Please feel free to use my weekly suggestions as you see fit.

*Please note: Students are encouraged to read 15-30 minutes/day in addition to the activities outlined below.

Monday ZOOM @ 1:00.

Literacy
Complete the Self-Reflection in the Week 11 Printables. For the Social section, consider reflecting on one of our Zoom meetings or one of the other interactive assignments we gave you such as phoning/Zooming with loved ones.
Spelling – Week #12 Review - optional

Numeracy
Sam reads for 30 minutes each night before he goes to bed. After two full weeks (weekdays and weekends), has Sam read for more than six hours? How do you know?

Other Learning Opportunities
Build an indoor camp/fort.  Ask your parents’ permission to build a cozy spot for you and a couple of your favourite stuffies to hang out with a flashlight and a good book.

Tuesday

Literacy
Watch Scaredy Squirrel
Write the rough copy of a fiction or non-fiction story about a person or animal who was afraid of something and tell us how they overcome that fear. You can use the writing frame in Week 11 printables to organize your thoughts before you write.

Numeracy
How much less than 252 is 136?  How much less than 425 is 318?
Show how you get your answers?  Create your own subtraction questions and have a family member answer them. Remember that the largest number needs to be on top and that each place values needs to line up.

Other Learning Opportunities
Design/Create a squirrel obstacle course. Start off by drawing a blue print and then build the course using your toys/stuffed animals or playdough.

Wednesday - ZOOM 11:00

Literacy
Edit and publish the story to wrote yesterday.  Self-edit and then ask a parent to edit before beginning your published work.

Numeracy
If there are 4 squirrels and 16 nuts, how would they share the nuts equally?
What is there were 8 squirrels and 48 nuts?  Make up your own squirrel word problem and ask a family member to answer it.

Other Learning Opportunities
Spy on a Squirrel:  Spot the squirrel in your yard/or a park and spend time watching what they do during their day.  Where do they go?  How do they move?  Create a map of your yard and track their travel throughout the day.

Thursday

Literacy
(Three Father’s Day gift ideas, choose one or do all 3-if you choose to make 2 or 3 you can still write your ’Things I love about dad’ list in a card.)

1.Things I love about Dad (or someone special in your life that you want to acknowledge).  Write a list of five ideas about dad (see YouTube examples below).  Make a rough copy and then edit (then, have your mom or another adult, but not dad edit). This is the craft you will be making tomorrow with these ideas.

2. Don’t have popsicle sticks? Paint a rock for dad and write ‘Dad, you rock!’

3. Collect 5-10 items in a bag that bring back special memories that you’ve shared with your dad.  Present this to dad on Father’s Day and explain why you chose each item. (Wilford Gordon MacDonald Partridge collected special items in the story we shared on Wednesday)

Numeracy
Sarah creates this number pattern: start at 1 and add 6 each time. Jordan creates this number pattern: start at 3 and add 7 each time. What is a number that will be in both Sarah and Jordan’s patterns? How do you know? Hint: you can use the 100 chart in your planner to help you solve this problem.

Other Learning Opportunities
How to draw a squirrel

Friday

Literacy
Finish Thursday Father’s Day project
Copy each one of the memories or reasons you love your dad on a tongue depressor or popsicle stick. Assemble the craft using the YouTube video on Thursday’s literacy.

Numeracy
Getting active with Math!  Create a BINGO card with your family and in each square put a simple exercise (e.g., jumping jacks, jog on the spot, dance around, etc.).  If you complete 20 minutes of physical activity, how much time you have to spend on each activity if you complete one line in any direction? If you complete two lines?  If you complete 20 random exercises.  Pick a game and try it out!

Other Learning Opportunities
