April 14-17th

April 14 -17th
I have decided to do daily activities but feel free to complete them on whatever day you’d like. Spelling will start next week.  Also if unclear of expectations, please look at the top of blog – Home Learning for more information.

Please email this week’s ‘Must Do’s’:  Send pictures of their work or Having your child write this email (or at least part of it) would be great keyboarding practice if you have the time.  Please feel free to email other activities if your child would like to share – I  enjoy seeing their work.
Must Do’s – April 14-17th:
1) Their list of 10 things that make them happy (Tuesday literacy)
2) Their challenge ‘art’ work (drawing holding the crayon between their toes
3) One piece of assigned math or a brief explanation of what they are focusing on if they are working online.
4) If possible, this week please go on Raz Kidsand do some reading including the comprehension questions. Next week I will be asking for them to send me a recording of their reading.
5) Also check out Prodigy at www.prodigygame.com/play  then click new student.  Our class code is  BB76E0 - this (currently free) site is for math practice, I have never used this but it was recommended and a couple students have already tried and liked it.  If you sign in using the class code then I can see what your child has completed and offer any recommendations/feedback as needed.
I have also included this websitethat Cam recommended - an option to access materialsthat are printable.

Please note: I am following the guidelines set out by our District Superintendant, Sylvia Russel.  The activities I am offering are ‘learning opportunities’.  Please feel free to use my weekly suggestions as you see fit.
'Kindergarten-Grade 3 planning will focus on language and literacy as well as numeracy from the provincial curriculum; an average of five to seven hours of learning opportunities per student per week'.  So, that would equal approximately 1- 1.5 hours/day.

Tuesday    ZOOM @ 1:00
Literacy
Make a list of 10 things that make you happy. Write a sentence with 5-10 of the words including detail.  E.g.) The sunshine makes me happy because it brightens my day and encourages me to walk Tucker or ride my bike.
Numeracy
Place Value Egg Hunt: Please use 8-10 of the plastic Easter Eggs (if you don’t have any just hide the papers or put inside a small container) write numbers on a piece of paper and put inside the eggs.  For example:    63, 347, 5424
Hide the eggs – when they find their eggs, they will write the numbers down in expanded form.  347 = 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones= 300 + 40 + 7
Then draw what it would look like (like base ten blocks)
larger squares for hundreds, sticks for tens and small squares for ones
For those doing thousands you can draw cubes or just circles
DPA (Daily Physical Activity)/Outdoor Learning
Sit still back to back with someone and listen quietly with your eyes closed. List all the things you can hear over three minutes. Each person should write their list/compare. Do you hear the same things?  How many different sounds can you make using only items in your back yard?

Wednesday
Literacy
Create a family message board. Have children join in choosing and writing the message each day.  Maybe leave or send special messages to loved ones through email or by mail.

Numeracy
Rounding Race: 1)Take the face cards out of the deck. 2)Deal the cards 3)Each player flips over 2 cards.  4) Round the number to the nearest 10-The person with the highest number wins the cards! Challenge: Round to the nearest 100, 1000 etc.  (Use the rounding rollercoaster template as a reminder and also a Rounding Hundred Chart -this is in this week’s Dropbox  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/665qm2p59ri9ylh/AABR9aL-6a1Smt2hd4EKRPEWa?dl=0
Extra Practice :ABCya Game (In Grade 3 Numeracy)  Soccer Math Estimating (start with adding 10’s). You can challenge yourself further once you master this level.  Have a whiteboard or piece of paper to write the numbers down in equation form for easy adding.
DPA/Outdoor Learning
Chair Aerobics: Position a chair so you have enough room to stretch out your legs. Make sure you are sitting on the edge of the chair with a straight back.
Play music with a strong beat and follow these actions:
Hiking: Swing your arms and reach left and right while tapping your toes and lifting your knees.
Swimming: Move your arms as if doing the front or back crawl and kick your legs in a flutter kick.

Cycling: Hold on to the seat of your chair and pedal your legs as if riding a bike.
Paddling: Use an imaginary paddle to paddle a canoe
Invite your family to join you and take turns being the leader

Thursday
Literacy
Watch and listen to the book ‘The Very Impatient Caterpillar’  https://youtu.be/h0meslYrZKk  ***Write what you liked or didn’t like about this story OR make a list of ways/ideas we can cope and be more patient during Covid 19 and how we will all ‘metamorphosize’ as we go through this pandemic OR write about how things might be different once it is over.
Numeracy
Choose from the Easter sheets (I was thinking pages 2,3,4,7,8 in Dropbox) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/665qm2p59ri9ylh/AABR9aL-6a1Smt2hd4EKRPEWa?dl=0
or one from K-5 resource  - they have some on rounding numbers
DPA/Outdoor Learning
While still being sure to practice Social Distancing:  Go out with your family. Take a bike ride, scooter ride, go roller blading or have family races.

Friday      ZOOM @ 11:00 Have paper with 2 faint lines down the middle horizontally and vertically (so there are 4 equal rectangles) for a directed drawing
Literacy
Choose a recipe to cook/bake that your child reads. When they are struggling with a word, ask them to sound out the letter sounds or to find little words in big words. Ask them to consider if the word they said makes sense.
Numeracy
“I am thinking of a number between 10 and 100 that has one 9 in it. What might the number be?” Make up your own place value riddles and try them out on a family member. More practice:  ‘Guess that Number’. (ABCya-Numbers)
DPA/Outdoor Learning
Play a game of Charades by acting out different animals. Try to guess your partner’s animal as quickly as you can. If it’s a nice day, do this in your backyard and get a little fresh air at the same time.

Just for Fun:
Thanks to 1) Rhys and 2) Kayla for this week’s jokes! I stuck to our Easter Theme!
1) What does the Easter bunny grow in his garden?
2)  How did the Easter bunny dry himself off?
3) Why shouldn’t you tell an Easter egg a good joke?
If you have jokes to share, please email them to me and I will continue to include a couple each week in our blog.
This week’s tongue twister was sent in by Neena!  Anyone that wants to send me one I will include it on our weekly blog!      Rubber baby buggy bumpers!
(Try to say it 3x fast-time it and see what your record is)
Directed Drawing:  How to draw baby Yoda
This week’s challenge is…
The Toe Artist Challenge...You need some crayons or felts and a piece of 8½ x 11 inch piece of paper (the regular size paper you use at school to draw). If you don’t have the correct blank paper, cut a piece of paper to the proper size. Place a crayon or felt between your toes (socks on or off, it’s up to you) then begin your masterpiece. You can change colors anytime but that is the only time you can use your hands. No pencils, felts, tape etc. can be used and you must sign your picture using a crayon/felt with your toes...good luck!  I will post a few of these masterpieces on our blog so if you would like yours to be ‘in the draw’, please indicate that in the email.

Answers:

1)    Eggplant!   2) With a ‘hare’ dryer!   3)It might crack up! 🐇🐰
