April 6-10th - Week #1
April 6-10th
***Please read the Home/Online first - Thanks!
***Please read the Home/Online first - Thanks!
By Thursday, I would like students to email me:
1) Their letter 2) Their best tongue twister challenge time 3) Their high score for the sock challenge and if possible a joke
*Having your child write this email (or at least part of it) would be great keyboarding practice if you have the time.
Literacy for the week:
***Listen to Jan Brett’s story – The Easter Egg
https://youtu.be/H1Xl1cCuJe8 Write about the book, highlight the main events of the story and/or tell why you liked or didn’t like the story. Illustrate your favourite part or design a new book cover.
***Write an email (or send a photo of a letter you’ve written) to me (Ms Rowledge-Toscani) explaining how you are doing. Make sure to include the following details about your spring break; favorite meal, something that made you laugh, favorite movie or book, something you made or built, something new that you tried, plus ways you are either keeping in shape or keeping your mind sharp.
***The Easter bunny is normally the face of Easter. Imagine if another animal was the face of Easter. What animal would you choose to represent Easter and why? How would this animal change Easter? Include an illustration of your ‘Easter ________’
***You wake up on Easter to discover that you have become the Easter bunny. What would your day be like as an Easter bunny? Describe your experience.
***During an egg hunt, you find a magical glowing egg. What happened next? Did anything interesting come out of the egg? Why was it glowing? Does it have magical powers?
***A great book is Kallie George’s book “The Enchanted Egg” – a couple years ago Kallie came to the Maple Ridge Library and we went to see her she is an excellent children’s writer. I will add her website to our useful links.
Easter Literacy and Math – https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m87hruqop3nzo8x/AACTqgow-VV0uaNGEeLO8tpua?dl=0
*Any of these activities can be printed and completed
Numeracy ***Draw a picture of your family from shortest to tallest. Label each one. Measure each family member with your marker-lengths (I know how many of you love to join your markers together! ). Write their lengths under their picture. Challenge: If your family has a measuring tape/meter stick, measure each person using this. Remember to record your results in centimeters (cm)
***Lisa and Dan went Easter egg hunting. Lisa found 23 eggs and
Dan found 77 eggs. How many eggs did they find combined? How many more eggs did Dan find than Lisa? Make up your own number story... ask a family member to solve it. Check their answer. *This can be adapted for your child by decreasing/increasing the number. Manipulatives (such as lego pieces) are helpful if you are working with smaller numbers

***I have 12 Easter Eggs. Make equations using the number 12. Challenge: How many multiplication and division questions can you make? Collect 12 small items that you can use as manipulatives.
***Find the total number of plates, glasses, napkins, forks, knives, and spoons for four place settings. Challenge:8 place settings, 16 place settings. Write these up as addition questions and multiplication questions. **Help out your parents by setting the table for Easter dinner this weekend.
Art – How to draw an Easter Bunny https://pin.it/8vT2NJV
DPA (Daily Physical Activity/Outdoor Learning)
***Take a family Walk. Can you find 5 beautiful things? When you get home draw/paint/sketch one of the beautiful things you saw.
***Make a ‘Hopscotch’ game outside using sidewalk chalk. Don’t have chalk? Build an obstacle course for you and your family to hop through.
***Make 10 Easter Eggs to hide around your house and/or yard (these can be made out of paper, crumpled tinfoil, building toys-it’s up to you). Time how long it takes your parent or sibling to find them (at least half of the egg must show). Now let them hide them on you. Time how long it takes you. Who found them faster?
***Go for a walk around your neighborhood with your family. How many hearts do you see in people’s windows/yards? This is a good way to practice your ‘Easter egg hunting’ skills
JUST FOR FUN!
This week’s tongue twister (Try to say it 3x fast-time it and see what your record is) - Each Easter Eddie Eats 80 Easter Eggs.
This week’s challenge is…The Sock-Clap Challenge...take 2 socks, fold them into an egg shape, sit on your bottom in a room where you can’t knock anything over and cause damage (parents to approve spot). Please avoid using a room that has a 15 foot ceiling as not all homes have high ceilings to use. The challenge is to throw your sock ball up as high as you can and clap as many times as you can before catching the ball with one hand. You must catch the ball to make it count and you must have an adult witness to count your claps and catch...good luck! Make sure you practice before asking someone to count for you.
JOKES – Please try to find or make up a joke that you’d like to share I will add them each week! We all need lots of laughs!

Div.9 Home/Online Learning
Div. 9 Home/Online Learning
Dear Families,
I hope you and your loved ones are well. It was so good to chat and see all of you last week! I also appreciate you taking the time to complete the surveys which I found very helpful. I understand that everyone is making adjustments to our present situation and that each of you have unique challenges at home. With that in mind, I have collected/created a bank of ideas that can be completed with and without technology, using items you already have in the home.
Our goal (as outlined by the Ministry of B.C) is to complete 5-7 hours of schoolwork each week and I will support (with Zoom) students to make connections with their classmates and continue to develop their social emotional learning.
Every day please try to:
***Read at least 15 minutes. You can read books, Raz Kids, Epic (add site) even comics or magazines.
Listening to stories, books is also very valuable and fun! So just cuddle up and READ!
***Do some kind of writing (approx. 30 minutes), a story, journal, letter, message. I will include weekly ideas but if you’d rather write on your own idea or one from this chart feel free.
***Numeracy – Math (approximately 30 minutes)
This can be a variety of activities and games. Remember math includes patterns, counting, addition, subtraction, graphing, geometry, calendar, measurement, fractions and more. So the possibilities are endless eg.) finding patterns or geometric shapes in your home or on a walk. Baking is reading and math! I will give you weekly ideas, plus sites like Abcya, Prodigy and some worksheets that you could print and complete.
***DPA (Daily Physical Activity) this is very important and as you know your children need to move! After 20-30 minutes of sitting we often have an action break! I will be adding suggestions for this as well. Plus Mrs. Boyes has some great ideas that are in the Dropbox.
We have been told to focus on literacy and numeracy at this time, but I have included some Science and Social Studies (which we call Theme) as well as Art/Drama ideas that you can work on. Dr. Saul will also be posting on his blog. All of these links are on (or will be on!) the Online Learning Page at the top of the blog!
As I mentioned to (hopefully) all of you I want you to be thinking about a ‘Passion Project’. Really the sky is the limit, anything goes but I will add more information about this in the future! My goal is for you to be able to share these on Zoom and maybe even have small group sessions while they are a work in progress.
Div. 9 Jokes – If anyone wants to send me any jokes, I will add them each week! We all need some laughs right now!

April 3/20
Dear Families,
It was wonderful connecting this week on Zoom, it was fun to see and talk to all of you.
I truly miss each and every one of you :( I will soon be sending out Zoom invitations for us to have a class meeting on Monday at 10:00 am and at 1:00 pm - hopefully you can make one of these work so that you will have a chance to connect with your classmates.
Parents you may have already seen this but I wanted to share it as we are in such an unprecedented time. We are all in this together and can only do our best! I was so impressed by what all of you have been doing so far! Just keep going, all your children seemed happy and learning new things. By Monday I will have more up on the blog for next week and a list of online resources that you can go to. Sorry I had hoped that I'd have it ready but I keep having technical difficulties (which I know will continue as we are all challenged by this new online learning!) My learning curve has been huge this week too!
I have brought the potates home so we can continue to watch them grow and we will do a few lessons on this as well.
Look for an e-mail before Monday. Have a good weekend and stay safe!

Friday, March 13th
Thanks to everyone for making the time to come for your child's conference. It was wonderful to see your children proudly showing you their work and also being able to celebrate and set goals for their final term.
On Monday we were very lucky to see the Maple Man from Quebec, he taught us how maple syrup is made. It was great and we even got to sample maple taffy! It was very yummy. Ask your child about what they liked and learned about this informative presentation.
I am very happy to report that our missing books were found, they are now labelled and students can start to bring them home. Thanks again to Caleb, Chase, Sean, Jayton, Holden for purchasing these books for Div. 9.
Our Act field trip to see Annie on April 16th is now up on the portal. Please sign up. Thanks.
Have a safe and enjoyable spring break! At this point the schools are planning to be back in session on March 30th.

As I mentioned in my email Div. 9 unfortunately is missing books two of the brand new books we just got last week, donated by students from the book fair. Pig the Tourist and, Pig the Star could everyone please check their homes in case your child took it home before I had it properly labelled and ready to be taken out. The whole class was so excited about this books so we really want to find them.
Speaking of emails - every week when I update this blog I send out a reminder email to you. Just yesterday we discovered one parent is not getting any of my emails :( If you are also not getting this emails please let me know asap. Thanks
Mr. Maxwell has started teaching a special unit on salmon which the children seem very excited about. What makes it even better is that Mrs. Passaglia is raising salmon so we are able to actually see the different stages of their lives. Please have your child read over the new song in their Poetry.
Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who helped make skating possible. It was so great to see all the students out skating with their peers having fun with their improved skating skills. I just love seeing the progress that they make from Oct. til March! So many became 'skaters'!
I want to send out a special thanks to Rhys' mom who comes in every Friday to do prep for our class. She is truly amazing with all that she accomplishes each week! I can't thank you enough. I'd also like to thank Colton, Kayla, Liam's mom who have helped with memory books or Reader's Workshop.

Grandparent Day was a big success! Thanks to all of those who were able to join us and also to everyone who welcomed other children to join you!

Thank you Jayton, Chase, Caleb and Holden for purchasing books for the class. We have already read most of them and students are anxious to take them out. Your kindness is really appreciated.
Fairview's first ever Kindness Parade turned out very well. We walked to Volker Park where many different classes from Laity View were there cheering us on and also spreading kindness with posters and high fives! I have asked the students to talk to you at home about kindness and ways you have spread and received kindness.
Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration is on Monday, March 2. Students are encouraged to wear Dr. Seuss attire or colours (red, blue or white).
Skating is next week and many students have not yet signed up.y Please do so asap, if we don't have enough drivers by Tuesday we will cancel. Thanks
Conference sign up is also on the portal. Please sign up and if these times do not work please let me know and we can make other arrangements. Thanks
